Ipsum secures substation installation and maintenance framework with SP Energy Networks

Ipsum Group has been awarded a new five-year framework contract with SP Energy Networks (SPEN) to deliver substation installation and associated services across its Manweb distribution region, with the option to extend for a further three years.

The contract covers North Wales, mid Wales, the Wirral, Merseyside and mid-Cheshire, and represents a continued long-term partnership between Ipsum and SPEN, reinforcing the company’s strong position within the UK electricity distribution sector.

The scope of works includes the provision of all resources required for the installation of plant and equipment within both existing brick-built and containerised substations. This includes transformers, switchgear and associated infrastructure critical to the safe and reliable operation of the distribution network.

In addition, under the framework, our teams will deliver the installation of plant and equipment within substations, including transformers and switchgear, alongside associated works such as testing and commissioning, earthing, cabling and jointing, and the integration of SCADA, RTU and battery systems.

This award comes amid continued investment across the UK electricity distribution sector, as network operators progress infrastructure upgrades to support increasing demand, network resilience and the transition to a low-carbon energy system.

The contract represents a further renewal of a long-standing relationship, with Ipsum having successfully delivered this framework for approximately two decades. This latest award marks the fifth iteration of the contract, underlining consistent delivery performance and customer confidence.

Ipsum continues to support SPEN across a number of strategic programmes, including the RMU Asset Replacement Programme, which includes both electrical installation and civils works and is scheduled to run through to 2028. Ipsum is also an approved supplier for SPEN Major Projects.

Lee Maxwell, Managing Director for Power at Ipsum Group said: “This latest framework award with SP Energy Networks is a strong endorsement of our long-standing delivery capability within the substation environment. Having supported this contract for around 20 years, its renewal reflects the consistency, technical expertise and commitment our teams bring to every project. It also reinforces our position as a trusted partner to DNOs, capable of delivering complex installation and upgrade programmes safely and efficiently. We look forward to continuing our work with SPEN and supporting the ongoing development and resilience of the Manweb network.”

Gareth Hill, Contracts Director at Ipsum said: “This framework strengthens the strategic bond and collaborative relationship between Ipsum and SP Energy Networks. It is a testament to our operational staff and management, who consistently deliver infrastructure projects safely, efficiently and to the highest standard.”

The agreement further strengthens Ipsum’s position within the UK power sector, building on its established portfolio of frameworks and long-term client relationships. It also reinforces the company’s capability to deliver critical infrastructure works that support network reliability, modernisation and the transition to a more flexible, low-carbon energy system.
