Impact Report 2024 – transforming our approach to ESG

Ipsum Group has today published its 2024 Impact Report, summarising the company’s approach to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) over the last 12 months.

The report captures progress to date in developing Ipsum’s sustainability strategy, shows how key acquisitions have further enhanced its ability to make a difference and sets out the key initiatives undertaken in the year. It also sets out the direction of travel in 2025 and beyond.

Among the highlights in the report are three key areas of development in ESG in 2024.

  1. Trenchless technology. Ipsum launched its dedicated trenchless division in January 2024, driving carbon reduction through this innovative ‘no dig’ approach to sewer line repair or replacement. Trenchless jobs reduce carbon emissions by as much as 85%, with other reductions realised by improved traffic flow.
  2. Employee benefits. Ipsum staff are now granted two volunteering days each year, in addition to their annual leave. This makes it easier for colleagues to deliver social value and enhances Ipsum’s impact on the communities we serve. And, in addition to six weeks’ statutory maternity pay, new mums now have an additional 12 weeks of full pay to enjoy with their newborn.
  3. Carbon footprint. Emissions recording practices have been overhauled to more accurately reflect Ipsum’s emissions, providing a solid baseline for ongoing improvements.

Andrew Cowan, CEO at Ipsum, said:
“2024 was a transformative year, marked by strategic expansion, innovation and a deepened commitment to sustainability.

“As regulations tighten and industries transition to low-carbon, resilient networks, we are very much focused on helping clients rise to the challenge, supporting them through sustainable, innovative solutions.

“The appointment a Head of ESG in 2024 marked an important step in aligning our operations with long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

“Through Head of ESG Ewan Donald we have been able to bring strategy and structure to how we approach sustainability. We have built an understanding of what matters – both to our business and to our wider stakeholders – transforming our approach from being reactive to client demands to proactively delivering what is important to our business.

“We continue to evolve as a responsible and future-focused business, and remain focused on delivering essential infrastructure services, enhancing operational resilience and driving industry-leading solutions across the water and power sectors.”

Ewan Donald, Head of ESG at Ipsum, added:
“This isn’t a business that needs an ESG strategy to provide purpose. Delivering value to society is what we do. However, we can have an even greater impact by delivering our work more sustainably. We are focused on achieving this and are in the process of agreeing a framework of objectives and targets to quantitively measure our impact.

“At the heart of this strategy is a focus on our people – keeping them safe and providing a great place to work – and on the environment, reducing emissions and helping our clients reduce the impact of their activities.

“ESG is now a strategic priority for the business, and I look forward to working with colleagues across the business to accelerate our efforts in the months and years ahead.”

Ipsum’s priorities are summarised as:

  • delivering outstanding service and supporting customers tackle systemic challenges – including modernising the grid and reducing pollution events;
  • ensuring staff safety and excellent working conditions; and
  • decarbonising the business.

Ipsum is now building out programmes of works focused on delivering maximum impact in these areas.
